Great post! One thing I find with many that are new to classic TSR era OSR retro-clones (I run OD&D) is that they never bring hirelings. They always try to go at things as a party of 4 or 6 or however many players there are. So I always hand out a prep sheet that outlines the importance of hired help, extra sacks to load up with treasure hauls, light sources, inheritance, and that levels 1-3 ARE the backstory. I always love to see the look of satisfaction they have knowing they earned that character, ha ha . But that's just me.

This was a great read for someone new to the OSR hobby! Do you recommend any systems other than OSE for the new-school OSR games mentioned in the second footnote?
